The USA Wins 19th Annual Nike Junior World Championship, Douai, France

The USA Elite Junior National Team defeated Turkey to capture their second World Championship in Douai, France in four years defeating Turkey 94 – 82.  The last championship won by the USA Elite was 2001 led by Tournament MVP Carmelo

Anthony, and All Tournament selections, Sheldon Williams, and Billy Edlin.  It was the second world championship for head coach Linzy Davis, who guided his USA team to its first championship, then finished second in 2002, third in 2003, then he assisted Steve

 

 

 Lavin in 2004 as the USA finished third, then Davis went back to the head coaching position and guided the team to victory with the help of Kevin Eastman, NBA Boston Celtics, and Durand Walker, The Family – Detroit, a Nike Elite Travel Team Head Coach.  Liinzy Davis has accumulated an international record of 26 – 2, since 2001, as a head coach for the USA. 

 

 

The USA trailed the entire first half and trailed 47 - 42 at half-time, as 7-foot center Spencer Hawes got into early foul trouble on a play that caused him a double foul, however, 6’9” Alex Stepheson, stepped in and scored six points and pulled down 4 rebounds in the half.  Ramar Smith was also solid scoring six points to help keep the USA close.

But it was Tournament MVP Tywon Lawson, who controlled the game on both ends of the floor in 37 minutes of play. Tywon led all scorers with 27 points, and added nine rebounds.  Kevin Durant added 18 points, six rebounds, and five steals.  And

Mailk Hairston, who also put up MVP stats throughout the tournament, finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds.
